Editor's Note:

This month Alex tackles one of the common misconceptions about EFT. David explores personal anchors, which are very useful for all of us to know about. Rehana details an interesting EFT session about phantom limb pain. Tom completes the story of young Carlos and shows us that sometimes the impossible does happen. I talk about the quality of EFT training and how some EFTers (including us) are forging ahead with EFT certification programs. And, if you're easily offended, please do not read the amusing tale of The Office Party. We wish all our American friends a belated Happy Thanksgiving!

"Instant" Cure2
by Dr. Alexander R. Lees

I'm writing about the following because I'm becoming concerned about how EFT is portrayed and perceived by some. The number of people that purport to know how to use EFT and really don't, is increasing. Normally the market place would take care of this situation, i.e., if an individual is not qualified, trained properly, or is incompetent - they don't have many clients and usually end up going out of business.

In the world of EFT that's not happening. Instead we hear that "EFT doesn't work" or, "I saw an EFT practitioner and he/she didn't seem to know what they were doing." So the problem is two-fold:

1. EFT gets a bad reputation.

2. People (the unsuspecting public) don't get the help they want.

It is the latter point that concerns me the most and has prompted me to write about this situation, with the hope that people interested in learning EFT do so from qualified, trained professionals.

One of the main bugaboos about EFT is the belief that it is an instant cure. To begin with, Energy Psychology, in its various forms - works. EFT is a tool that fits under this umbrella and works quite nicely. It's fairly easy to learn and apply, and like many experimental approaches before it, will no doubt take its proper place in main stream approaches, to the benefit of all.

Like many things new on the market, EFT comes loaded with a lot of marketing promises which is sometimes just plain hype, and therein lays the problem. Many have been led to believe "all you need do is tap certain acupuncture points, and your problem will disappear." Well, if this were literally true, the line-up of people would stretch from the practitioner's door to China.

Hopefully, this unique tool will survive the hype, and in the hands of properly trained individuals, provide relief from the main aspect present in most issues presented - that is to feel better about whatever happened, and then be able to move on with life.

Granted, given enough sessions, anyone using EFT to help others will no doubt experience a "one minute wonder", that is, someone is bound to present a problem, and one round of tapping later, the problem (the discomfort or upset) will have disappeared.

Way back when, I attended one EFT training seminar that was being filmed. I was approached and asked if I'd worked with any multiple personality cases. After affirming I had, I then found myself some five minutes later in front of the camera with a young lady. The feedback after the session ranged from "Brilliant!" to "You didn't tap enough."

Interestingly, there was more of the latter, than the former, to which I responded: "Well, a certain amount of time needs to be allotted for information gathering, in particular, to find out what the client wants to accomplish." Apparently, this was a new and novel idea to many that attended, as evidenced by the responses.

Since learning EFT and integrating it into the practice, 20+% of sessions are done by phone. We email a diagram of the salient acupuncture points, and I help the client zero in (get specific) on the issue or issues, and then have them tap whilst focussed on the problem they want help with. Once I'm on the phone with the client, quite often the first thing that needs to be dealt with is the misconceptions and hype about EFT. Many people seem to have the illusion that they can "just tap and the problem is gone!"

Here's an excerpt from one of my phone sessions, and should serve to clarify how many have come to believe this is how EFT works. This is an actual conversation, and it's not the first - I've had many like and similar ones.

C = Client
A = Alex

C: I'd like to tap on my issues.
A: And, which of those issues would you like to start with?
C: Well, let's do all of them.
A: Certainly, however, to give you the best possible assistance, it would help if you decide which issue you'd like to start with, and we'll go from there.
C: I don't understand. Why do you want to talk about it? Why can't we just tap?
A: On what, specifically?
C: Well, I don't know. I was told a person just taps, and feels better.

The most astounding part of this conversation was the fact that the person I was speaking with was advertising themselves as an EFT Practitioner on their website.

I suppose many will present the argument that the above is exceptional. The specific wording might be, but the idea of "just tap and feel better" isn't for many, and I've experienced the above, in various forms, since becoming involved in EFT. My concern is the promotion and marketing, and the promises of a quick fix will unnecessarily contaminate a perfectly good tool. My hope is that this kind of advertising fades so the tool can take its proper place in the therapeutic toolbox.

For some reason known only to him, Gary Craig no longer lists workshops on his site. Perhaps he's appalled with some of the quality of the content offered . But, then what can one expect when efforts at establishing standards has been met with resistance?

However, several good souls have stepped up to fill the breach, i.e., offer quality training which tests the knowledge, proficiency and practical skills of the participants. Then they issue a certificate of certification to those that are qualified. Googling the query will lead you to sites doing just that.

Granted, some people can learn certain things from books. Other times a video or audio presentation will suffice. I think for such an important subject as a quest for better mental/emotional health, supervised, hands-on training and testing, is by far the first choice. So, get Googling!

For those that haven't had the pleasure, please check out the blog from Steve Wells and Dr. David Lake (in Australia). They have two articles posted expressing concerns about some people's promotion of EFT and what they call the "quick fix"- they can be found at: http://www.eftdownunder.com/blog/?p=11 - both articles are a good read.

Personal Anchors
by David Marshall

Every experience that we have had includes some or all of the sensory experiences - visual, auditory, kinesthetic, olfactory and gustatory. Anchoring refers to the tendency for the repetition of any one of these elements to bring back the whole of the experience. It occurs all of the time naturally. For example, the smell of newly baked bread may bring back the whole experience of being in your mother's kitchen. A couple's favourite song brings back memories of the romance of when they first heard it. Such experiences can bring about powerful changes in our state. It goes on all around us. For example, many car advertisements on TV give little technical information about the model. What they do is to set a scene which shows a desirable state like being free, successful, or attractive to the opposite sex. They anchor the stimulus of the car to the state that people are likely to find attractive by using distinctive visuals or sounds.

It is useful to get to know our personal anchors. Some will be resourceful - perhaps walking through your own front door, being touched by your children, putting on golfing shoes. Some will put you into an unresourceful state - perhaps meeting a certain person, going into a particular office, hearing a particular phrase. (One of the strongest examples for most people is their name. I knew somebody whose name was Ronald, but he was mostly known as "Ron". Whenever his mother was going to tell him off for doing something wrong she would call him "Ronald". So this became an anchor with negative associations, even when other people called him "Ronald" many years later he felt that something was wrong.) Once you know them, you can decide whether to respond or not.

It is possible to anchor a resourceful state to be accessed whenever you want it. Decide what state you want - perhaps confidence, calmness, relaxation, charisma - and then remember a time when you really had it.

Put yourself, fully associated, into that experience seeing what you saw, hearing what you heard, feeling what you felt. Play it like a video in your imagination. Then, at the peak of the experience either touch a part of your body yourself, or get someone else to, so that the feeling and state that it is connected to become "anchored" to that specific touch. It can be as simple as touching a knuckle on the back of your hand or pressing a finger against your thumb. Keep it simple to start with!

It's a bit like going up a roller coaster. You know, when the car starts going up a steep incline and you can feel the excitement building up, and as it gets higher and higher so does the feeling of excitement mixed with anticipation - and then WHOOOSH - it goes over the crest of the hill and the feelings explode!

To test the anchor, touch the part of your body on which the state is anchored, and it will return. To make the response stronger, go through the anchoring process five times.

To anchor an experience effectively:

1. It should be timed just as the state is reaching its peak.

2. It should be linked to a state that is cleanly and completely experienced.

3. The anchor should be unique and easily replicated

4. The person needs to be associated and the experience intense.

This is an example of how to set a kinesthetic anchor. You can also anchor states visually, e.g. a trainer can anchor a resourceful presentation state to the corner of a flip chart, or to a specific sound. When a friend of mine used to run Presentation Training classes (in the days of the overhead projector!!) he used to anchor calm, confident state to the sound of switch that turned the projector on. To do this was very easy for most people. All he did was get them to stand next to a projector and remember a time when they felt calm and confident and, as the experience peaked, he would turn on the projector. The process was usually repeated 5 times to ensure that it was firmly linked. Then when the student turned the projector on that sound would link back to the state of "calm confidence" and they were ready start the show.

You can stack several examples of the same resource by accessing different resourceful experiences and anchoring by the same touch.

Another form of anchoring which you may find useful is called the circle of excellence. To do this, imagine there is a circle in front of you on the floor of a certain colour into that circle imagine you are projecting the states that you want to achieve. For instance, confidence, resourcefulness, eloquence, bravery, etc. You can do this by imagining how it would feel to be in any of those emotions, and one at a time, pretend that you can project the emotion into the circle. And then when you are satisfied that you have everything there, step into the circle and imagine that you are drawing into your body all of those states and, as you do this, you can also set up an anchor on the back of your hand. Then, whenever you are in a situation where you would like to feel more powerful you can access those states by applying the anchor.

A guy I used to work with was due to have a meeting with his boss, and his boss was a difficult person to deal with! So, he imagined how he would handle the boss, and he visualized seeing himself dealing with this man with total confidence and calmness. He projected this into a circle of excellence, stood in the circle, absorbed it, and added a little twist of his own! He stepped out of the circle imagined it was a lasso, picked it up and hung it from his belt! So then, when he went into the boss's office he threw the lasso and over the chair that he was going to sit in and then sat in it. He said the meeting was the most effective he'd ever had with that particular man, because, instead of being afraid, tongue tied and unable to answer criticism effectively, he handled it totally differently, and remained calm and confident. He had now overcome the unresourceful anchors of previous meetings with his boss which had been affecting his behaviour and, therefore, the way he dealt with his boss.

There are many other advanced forms of anchoring that take many different forms, for example, sliding anchors, stacked anchors, chained and collapsed anchors, that can be used therapeutically or just for fun. For now, just believe me, it is well worth learning how to do it so that you can access positive, resourceful states when ever you feel a need to.

So, this may all be a figment of our imagination or not, but when you can learn how to use your imagination to achieve the things that you want to achieve, then you will be more able to control yourself and your life.

EFT & Phantom Limb Pain
by Rehana Webster

Recently I had someone call me to inquire if I could help with phantom limb pain. I had not had any experience in this area but was sure that EFT could reduce or eliminate the pain, so we booked an appointment. The client drove (on his motorcycle) for three hours, using only one arm to steer the bike to come and see me. "Paul" had lost his arm in a biking accident when he was a teenager and has experienced intense pain in the missing limb ever since the accident, which happened over 30 years ago.

The first thing I did was my Trauma Buster technique. We went over the accident and rated it. Then I showed Paul the short cut tapping protocol and got him to tap with his one arm… the left arm. We rated the intensity of the accident with each stage of the technique -- black and white movie, reversing the movie, cartooning the movie, putting music to the movie, and then finally the "as if" stage so Paul could imagine what might have happened differently from the reality.

The intensity of the accident was greatly reduced, and then to close all the loops and aspects of the accident, we tapped on:

  • apologizing to the arm
  • grieving for the lost arm
  • for not having cared enough to keep his arm safe.

He found the last statement quite helpful as he said, "It was like I lost my buddy." This greatly reduced the pain from a ten to a four, and then to a dull throb.

Next I got Paul to objectify the pain. I asked him to imagine that his right arm was still there and then asked him, "What does it look like?" He said, "It's like a glove, red, hot and heavy. The skin looks like a butcher's metallic glove, all crinkled and very heavy." I got him to stay focused on the image and then I tapped him and asked him to let me know what changes were happening to the image and the pain. He said, "My arm looks like its changing color and becoming pink, and it feels lighter. Then I asked him to imagine that the pain was flowing out of his fingers like in a kung fu movie. He liked that! This further reduced the pain and the prickling sensations he feels in the missing limb.

However, each time we stopped tapping the pain would slowly rise. At this point I asked him to do the "continuous" tapping on his fingers. Using the fingers and thumb of his left hand he was able to do the tapping, and he noticed that as long as he did the continuous finger tapping the pain was not there.

He was very pleased with the first session because he said that the pain had NEVER stopped or gone down in intensity ever since the accident. Before he left he mentioned that prescription drugs had not helped with the pain so he was quite happy now, and felt he had found something that would manage the pain… for the first time in 30 years! To end our session I asked him to do some homework:

  • To keep a record of the amount of times, and when, he did the finger tapping.
  • Also he is to do the short cut tapping on the glove pain.

Paul said he was looking forward to his next appointment so he could report back on his progress, and to also work on other aspects of the accident, and how his life had been affected by them.

RE: Christmas Party
I'm happy to inform you that the company Christmas Party will take place on December 23rd, starting at noon in the private function room at the Grill House. There will be a cash bar and plenty of drinks! We'll have a small band playing traditional carols...please feel free to sing along. And don't be surprised if the MD shows up dressed as Santa Claus! A Christmas tree will be lit at 1.00p.m. Exchange of gifts among employees can be done at that time; however, no gift should be over $20.00 to make the giving of gifts easy for everyone's pockets. This gathering is only for employees! The MD will make a special announcement at the Party.

Merry Christmas to you and your Family.

RE: Holiday Party
In no way was yesterday's memo intended to exclude our Jewish employees. We recognize that Chanukah is an important holiday, which often coincides with Christmas, though unfortunately not this year. However, from now on we're calling it our 'Holiday Party'. The same policy applies to any other employees who are not Christians. There will be no Christmas tree or Christmas carols sung. We will have other types of music for your enjoyment. Happy now?

Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Regarding the note I received from a member of Alcoholics Anonymous requesting a non-drinking table...you didn't sign your name. I'm happy to accommodate this request, but if I put a sign on a table that reads, 'AA Only', you wouldn't be anonymous anymore!!!! How am I supposed to handle this? Somebody? Forget about the gift exchange, no gift exchange allowed now since the Union Officials feel that $20.00 is too much money and Management believe $20.00 is a little cheap. NO GIFT EXCHANGE WILL BE ALLOWED.

RE: Holiday Party
What a diverse group we are! I had no idea that December 20th begins the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which forbids eating and drinking during daylight hours. There goes the party! Seriously, we can appreciate how a luncheon at this time of year does not accommodate our Muslim employees' beliefs, perhaps the Grill House can hold off on serving your meal until the end of the party - or else package everything up for you to take home in a little foil doggy bag. Will that work? Meanwhile, I've arranged for members of Weight Watchers to sit farthest from the dessert buffet and pregnant women will get the table closest to the toilets, Gays are allowed to sit with each other, Lesbians do not have to sit with gay men, each will have their own table. Yes, there will be flower arrangements for the gay men's table too. To the person asking permission to cross dress - no cross dressing allowed. We will have booster seats for short people. Low fat food will be available for those on a diet. We cannot control the salt used in the food we suggest those people with high blood pressure taste the food first. There will be fresh fruits as dessert for Diabetics; the restaurant cannot supply 'No Sugar' desserts. Sorry! Did I miss anything?!?!

Vegetarians -- I've had it with you people!!! We're going to keep this party at the Grill House whether you like it or not, so you can sit quietly at the table furthest from the 'grill of death', as you so quaintly put it, you'll get your salad bar, including organic tomatoes. But you know tomatoes have feelings too, They scream when you slice them. I've heard them scream. I'm hearing the scream right NOW!! I hope you all have a rotten holiday!

They said it was impossible... Part 2
by Tom Dorzab

In the last newsletter, in Part 1 of this series, we learned about Carlos (not his real name), a little boy with color blindness. Carlos came to see me because he was going through some very difficult times trying to adjust to his condition and having to endure the teasing of his classmates. In Part 1 we summarized the first two sessions with Carlos. We begin Part 2 with the third session.

About two weeks after the second session, he returned for the third. It didn't take me long to realize that this boy's mother was Super Mom. She had done such a good job of doing the homework with Carlos, that almost everything I checked was perfect. While testing his meridians however, his Triple Warmer Meridian decided it didn't like the idea of my changing its habits. When this Triple Warmer Reactivity occurs, which was quite unexpected in Carlos' case, all of our corrections can be stopped in their tracks. The Triple Warmer Meridian is notorious for tenaciously holding onto habits. Most of our energetic habits are formed for our self-protection and are a very good thing. The problem is that adaptation is the name of the game and sometimes energetic habits that once served us well, don't allow us to adapt to new situations. This is where energy interventions, whether they are energy psychology or some other form of energy medicine really earn their keep. Fortunately, this time we were able to calm its fears fairly easily and eventually only needed to correct imbalances in his Kidney Meridian.

I also corrected something known as The Assemblage Point. Work with the Assemblage Point is work on a very deep level. It has been called the bridge between your soul and your consciousness. If that's not deep, I don't know what is. When it's working properly, it can pull things into your life just when you need them. When it's not working properly, it can alter one's perception of reality. A number of things can have harmful effects on the Assemblage Point. The one that seemed to fit in Carlos' case is when one has been placed in circumstances that cause self-doubt. Being colour blind could certainly cause self-doubt, especially if one's classmates relentlessly tease you about it. After working with the Assemblage Point we moved on to the vortex and irregular energies around his eyes. Super Mom had corrected both at home and they were still holding! What a pleasure it is to work with such highly motivated people!

At this point we did some EFT for "this problem" since he could not think of anything that bothered him at the moment. I showed Super Mom how to get her free EFT manual, in Spanish, on the internet and suggested they get good at using it. I told them to keep up the good work, call me if you need help or another appointment and sent them on their way.

About a month later, while talking to another client who knew Carlos and his mother, I was told that she had decided to come for a session after hearing that Carlos, had been cured. He was no longer color blind! While, from my reaction, she could see this was just another walk in the park for me (yea and Mt. Everest is just another mountain), I have to admit I may have been a little excited (kinda like the first astronauts to walk on the moon were a little excited).

Obviously I had to check this out a little more closely. After contacting Super Mom, I learned that Carlos had indeed begun to see all colors. First it is important to note that during the year before, Carlos had been diagnosed by an ophthalmologist. The diagnosis was deuteranopia, or red/green color blindness. After our sessions, he was again tested and the result was that he could now distinguish between all colors but was still having some trouble with shades of red and green.

I have to be fair here. Carlos was also taken to a Spanish healer after our sessions together. This healer is gifted with the ability to see frequencies outside the range most of us can see. After assessing Carlos' energy systems, she said his energies looked quite good and to keep doing whatever they were doing (it's always nice to get a little positive reinforcement). She also found some irregularities around his head and corrected them. She said it looked to her like he had an energetic helmet around his head. In the end, it seems Carlos was the recipient of three different modalities of Energy Medicine, Eden Energy Medicine, EFT and whatever the Spanish healer may call her craft. The way I see it, Energy Medicine is Energy Medicine and as long as people get better after working with it, the more the merrier.

The above facts and figures are interesting I admit, but they pale in comparison to the result. Super Mom has told me that Carlos, for the first time in his life, has asked for a big package of colored pencils. This was a surprise since Carlos had never before had any interest in coloring. It seems he had developed a love of coloring books for some reason. If this story doesn't warm your heart, nothing will. This boy's life has been changed in wonderful ways we cannot even begin to imagine now. We will never know what combination of modalities (if any) may have resulted in the changes in Carlos. It doesn't matter to Carlos though. He's too busy coloring.

This is just one more example of impossible dreams becoming possible. If you have a disease or a condition that you have been told is incurable, join the increasing ranks of people who have beaten the odds. The great part is that much of this work can be done on yourself by yourself. Sure, you will probably need to consult with a practitioner from time to time to stay on the right track, but that's a small price to pay for the possible benefits. What do you have to lose? Join the crowd! Take back your power!

Berit's Corner

Timing, or synchronicity, has always intrigued me. Generally I don't know why (or how) certain events happen at the same time, but I usually pay attention when they do and then follow up later to see what outcome (if any) occurs. Recently something happened to cause me to pay attention. Steve Wells and Dr. David Lake (EFT experts in Australia) each wrote an article for their newsletter about the misconception that EFT is a "quick fix" and what they thought about that. At the same time, Alex had written on the same subject for our newsletter. And, I also got into the act by speaking with a couple of EFT experts about the subject.

It seems all of us are of the same opinion - EFT is starting to get a bad rap and the public is somewhat confused. We get many emails and phone calls from people looking for a trained, qualified person that uses EFT. I'm happy to recommend people, but only when we have first hand knowledge of their proficiency and skills, or a person we know and trust recommends someone.

I had a request for a referral the other day and I was disappointed by the fact that there was no one I knew (in that city) I could recommend. This got me to thinking. This is the perfect time to focus on providing quality training of EFT and testing of would be EFT practitioners on their knowledge of EFT, their proficiency in applying EFT and their level of skill.

So, that's what we're going to do! As well, a few other people are doing the same. In our own small way we are hoping to set some standards for the training of EFT and once a person has completed our certification programs, that person will know what they're doing with regards to applying EFT.

Rehana Webster, currently in New Zealand, but moving to Australia in early 2009 and Lindsay Kenny in San Francisco, California, along with us here on the west coast of Canada, are offering a comprehensive EFT Certification program. We are hoping that other EFT experts will do the same, if they aren't already. We think of ourselves as pioneers and our aim is to encourage others to provide a like and similar certification program. We don't all have to teach the exact same info, but we should all be testing people on their practical skills. This is very important because doing so will further enhance the reputation of EFT and it will also serve the public well.

If we all work hard and do our job well, then in the not to distant future, we won't be hearing, "EFT doesn't work." Instead we'll hear, "EFT is great. I feel so much better."

We are not forming any kind of organization or association; we are just a group of people that want the best for EFT. If there are like minded souls out there in EFT Land that are already doing certification EFT training (with practical testing) we'd love to hear from you, and share info. We can always learn from others, and besides, sharing is fun!

For those of you that would like to pursue certification in EFT please check out the new information on our website

Our new program will go into effect in January 2009. Together, we may be able to take EFT to a new and exciting level. We look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Till next month,
Take care.

Why we Love Children!

Why do we love children?

1) NUDITY
I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark naked! As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my 5-year-old shout from the back seat, 'Mom, that lady isn't wearing a seat belt!'

2) OPINIONS
On the first day of school, a first-grader handed his teacher a note from his mother. The note read, 'The opinions expressed by this child are not necessarily those of his parents.'

3) KETCHUP
A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup out of the jar. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the phone. 'Mommy can't co me to the phone to talk to you right now. She's hitting the bottle.'

4) ELDERLY
While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, 'The tooth fairy will never believe this!'

5) DEATH
While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased.

The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: 'Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he goooes.' (I want this line used at my funeral!)

6) SCHOOL
A little girl had just finished her first week of school. 'I'm just wasting my time,' she said to her mother. 'I can't read, I can't write, and they won't let me talk!'

7) BIBLE
A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages.

'Mama, look what I found,' the boy called out.
'What have you got there, dear?'
With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered, 'I think it's Adam's underwear!'
