Editor's Note:

This month Alex clears up any confusion people may have about the PR point (Psychological Reversal) also known as the karate chop point, and explains how, when and why to use it. Rehana tells us a heartwarming story about helping an eight year old boy. Tom's article is the last in his series of energy medicine exercises, and I write about our new blog. Due to the unsettling times we've added some silly stuff to take our minds off what's going on around the world due to the financial crisis. And, there's an article about an amazing horse that will warm your heart. Reading this edition of Reflections will hopefully give you a few minutes respite from all the bad news out there. Enjoy!

PR Point (Psychological Reversal)
by Dr. Alexander R. Lees

I've presented hundreds of seminars on the subject of EFT, and, as participants continue to enhance their learning, the need to understand PR (Psychological Reversal) and when to use it, becomes a concern. Not to worry. I'm going to address the how, when and why of using the PR point.

To begin with, the PR point is also called the karate chop point, and it's on the side of the hand. I prefer to call it the PR point because it's the point you tap on when something called Psychological Reversal is present. But, I'm getting ahead of myself, so let's start at the beginning.

There are two ways to include the PR point, but before we do that, I'd like to clarify another aspect that relates to it before we go any further.

As I mention, I've been teaching EFT for many years now (almost ten) and some of the participants at my workshops have already had some exposure or experience with EFT. Some have attended an introductory workshop somewhere, or have perhaps watched the DVDs available, but since the following issue shows up again and again, I'd like to address it first.

There are two main parts to EFT. The PR point, where a setup phrase (as it's referred to) is used. Many of you who have played around with EFT will be familiar with the setup phrase; it usually begins with the words, "Even though I (state the problem)..."

The second part of basic EFT is to learn the location of the acupuncture points to be tapped, and tap them using a reminder phrase. This is where there seems to be some confusion.

Quite a few people (that have been pre-trained) come to the workshop and begin tapping all of the points using the setup phrase. Rather than dwell on where the person learned this, or what caused him/her to think this is correct, let's just look at the accepted model instead.

As I mentioned earlier, there are two ways to incorporate the use of the PR point.

The first option is simple - Begin every tapping session by tapping the PR point and using a setup phrase as you do so. For example, let's say you have a fear of widgets.

  • Begin tapping the PR point, and continue to do so as you say: Even though I have this fear of widgets, I deeply and completely accept myself.

  • Repeat this phrase three times.

  • Now, tap the rest of the points in the sequence using a reminder phrase: This fear of widgets, this fear of widgets.

  • By repeating the reminder phrase, you accomplish two things - You ensure you have tapped each point enough times, and have kept the focus on the fear you want to eliminate.

Upcoming Seminars

As of Oct. 1/08 we will be calling our EFT workshops:
EFT - The Basics
EFT - Intermediate
EFT - Advanced

EFT Approved Level 1

The optional way of using the PR point is the following.

  • Name the problem, and rate it from 0 to 10, with 10 being the worst, or highest intensity.

  • Tap the main points, remembering to use the appropriate reminder phrase.

  • Rate the intensity again.

  • If the numbers didn't go down, or did so but by no more than one or two points or so, it's useful to believe the person being tapped is psychologically reversed.

Now you would tap the PR point using the setup phrase, but modify it slightly. How?

  • By simply saying: Even though I still have some of this fear of widgets, I deeply and completely accept myself. Please remember to say this three times.

  • You would then do another round on the main EFT points, and modify the reminder phrase by saying: This remaining fear, this remaining fear.

So there you have the proper way of using the PR point. Start every tapping session with it, or use it, after you have tapped the regular points and there is little change in intensity (or the numbers don't drop significantly); then tap the PR point by saying the setup phrase with the slight modification.

If you do the sequence first, then use the PR point, please remember to modify the reminder phrase when you tap the main points again. Your success rate will go up, and your frustration will go down!

Next month, I will offer more comprehensive insights into what PR means. I'll also try to remember to pick on some examples other than those poor defenceless, much maligned widgets, as the subject matter.

Meet Molly

Editor's Note: This story touched me and I thought with all the bad news in the world at the moment, it's great when you can take a moment out and read something heart warming.

She's a grey speckled pony who was abandoned by her owners when Hurricane Katrina hit southern Louisiana. She spent weeks on her own before finally being rescued and taken to a farm where abandoned animals were stockpiled. While there, she was attacked by a pit bull terrier and almost died. Her gnawed right front leg became infected, and her vet went to LSU for help, but LSU was overwhelmed, and this pony was a welfare case. You know how that goes.

But after surgeon Rustin Moore met Molly, he changed his mind. He saw how the pony was careful to lie down on different sides so she didn't seem to get sores, and how she allowed people to handle her. She protected her injured leg. She constantly shifted her weight and didn't overload her good leg. She was a smart pony with a serious survival ethic.

Moore agreed to remove her leg below the knee, and a temporary artificial limb was built. Molly walked out of the clinic and her story really begins there. 'This was the right horse and the right owner, Moore insists.' Molly happened to be a one-in-a-million patient. She's tough as nails, but sweet, and she was willing to cope with pain. She made it obvious she understood that she was in trouble. The other important factor, according to Moore, is having a truly committed and compliant owner who is dedicated to providing the daily care required over the lifetime of the horse.

Molly's story turns into a parable for life in post-Katrina Louisiana. The little pony gained weight, and her mane finally felt a comb. A human prosthesis designer built her a leg. The prosthetic has given Molly a whole new life, Allison Barca DVM, Molly's regular vet, reports.

And she asks for it. She will put her little limb out, and come to you and let you know that she wants you to put it on. Sometimes she wants you to take it off too. And sometimes, Molly gets away from Barca. 'It can be pretty bad when you can't catch a three-legged horse,' she laughs.

Most important of all, Molly has a job now. Kay, the rescue farm owner, started taking Molly to shelters, hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers. Anywhere she thought that people needed hope. Wherever Molly went, she showed people her pluck. She inspired people, and she had a good time doing it.

'It's obvious to me that Molly had a bigger role to play in life.' Moore said. 'She survived the hurricane, she survived a horrible injury, and now she is giving hope to others.'

Barca concluded, 'She's not back to normal, but she's going to be better. To me, she could be a symbol for New Orleans itself.' This is Molly's most recent prosthesis. The bottom photo shows the ground surface that she stands on, which has a smiley face embossed in it. Wherever Molly goes, she leaves a smiley hoof print behind.

Helping a Fussy Eater
by Rehana Webster

A young boy of eight was brought to see me by his mother because he was extremely fussy about eating. His mother was concerned because Tom (not his real name) has limited the number of food stuffs he would eat to such a degree that it had become a real problem trying to get him to get all his nutritional needs met.

Susan (not her real name) brought Tom over and sat on one side of the room and let me do the entire session without interfering. I quickly recognized that Tom was a highly intelligent little boy. So I asked Tom, "What is this fussy eating all about?"

He replied, "I can't eat anything that is soft and warm." Well, that takes care of about very thing one can think of in our diet, except for perhaps frozen food. Yes, that is all he would eat! All vegetables had to be frozen for him to eat them. I asked Tom, "What happens if you do eat soft, warm food?" Tom said, "I vomit it out because my stomach knows it's soft, warm food."

Then I asked him, "How do you know the food is soft and warm before it even goes into your stomach?" Tom said, "The taste buds on my tongue tell me and the feel buds on the side of my tongue, tell me." I asked him, "Do your taste/feel buds ever make mistakes?" "No," he responded. I told him that I would like to conduct a scientific experiment. Then I asked him to close his eyes and I promised not to put anything in his mouth.

Susan had a plate of soft, warm food (a piece of avocado, broccoli, cake and chickpea dip) ready and waiting. I told Tom the experiment involved me putting one of the items on his finger and he had to guess which item it was. I put each item on his finger and asked him what he thought it was. Then I asked him to open his eyes and tell me if he thought he had guessed right. He said, "Yes." I had to tell him that the feel buds on his finger had been WRONG every time. Yes, every time! I was closely watching Tom's expression and there sure was confusion on his face. His eyes rolled around as he tried to comprehend what this meant.

I asked him if his mother had tapped on/with him and he said he didn't want that. So I asked him if I could show him how relaxing it was and before he could come up with an excuse I started tapping gently on him and saw that he immediately relaxed. I continued tapping on him while we discussed the intricate aspects of food and vegetables, and what he could allow himself to eat, or not eat. I continued to tap on his EFT points while we had a conversation about his fussy eating habits. We didn't use any set up statements and just had a chit chat at an eight year old level about soft and warm food. He certainly had some very complex rules about food. Susan was watching from the side lines. She told me later that he would not let her touch him and she was not allowed to even show him how the tapping worked.

Tom changed tact then. He said, "There is a part of me that switches on at night and another part that switches on during the day, and the parts are getting mixed up. One of the parts wants to change. I've been thinking of how that could happen?"

Really… all this from an eight year old? This was an unprecedented opportunity not to be missed. I asked Tom, "Which one part did?" He replied, "The part that was the one that could eat home made French fries." I pointed out that French fries are soft and warm. He patiently explained, "The fries can only be eaten if they are popped into hot oil for three seconds and no more, or they wouldn't be edible." I wanted to bring in a counter example of this and asked, "What about if the frozen vegetables were popped into the hot oil for 3 seconds, and no more than 3 seconds, could you eat them just like you eat the fries?" After all the taste/feel buds on his tongue and stomach thought that it was OK to eat soft/warm fries, so therefore he could trust that the taste/feel buds would now feel it was also safe and let him eat the quick fried frozen vegetables as well.

While he was talking about the fries, I took the opportunity to anchor the feelings on his left wrist and while we spoke about the vegetables, I anchored the feelings on his right wrist. Then I took the conversation to the part of him which could eat warm, soft fries and didn't think that warm, soft vegetables were edible. While we talked I kept firing the anchors, and kept him engaged in the conversation about these dissenting parts.

This was an intense session and as we were about to end, I asked Tom if he could try out the vegetables and see how his stomach responded. He said he would give it a try but he certainly was not convinced at all. I also asked him to report back to me the next morning and I can tell you I had no hope at all that he would do that, let alone change his eating habits.

Next morning as I walked up to the office, the whole family was waiting for me. Oh no, I thought… it didn't work, it got worse!

Surprise, surprise… Susan had a grin from ear to ear. Young Tom had a card he made for me… and Susan said he NEVER makes cards for anyone. However, the best news that really blew me away was…

When they left my office the day before, Tom insisted on going to the supermarket and picking out some frozen vegetables. He then supervised the cooking of the frozen food and ate the whole lot. As if that was not enough, the next morning he ate heaps of vegetable for breakfast! The parents could not believe their eyes. I could not believe that a little bit of EFT and some NLP together, had made such fast changes for this boy.

That was not all. At night Tom insisted that Susan do some tapping on him as well as first thing in the morning!

I can tell you that I was the most relieved. I felt like I had passed one of the biggest tests in my career, and passed with flying colors!

So, try EFT on everything, be creative, and mix and match techniques.

Energy Exercises for Everyday Living
(Article 5 and last in the series)

by Tom Dorzab

Here's to your health

Today we will learn more exercises that take very little time, but will help you to:

  • Stimulate your lymphatic system by yourself.

  • Strengthen your aura.

Front Neurolymphatic Reflex Points

As I mentioned in the last newsletter, you need a partner to give you a Spinal Flush. If you don't have the luxury of a partner to perform the Spinal Flush on you, don't be alarmed. You can get almost the same effect by massaging the Neurolymphatic Reflex Points on more accessible parts of your body. Without a diagram it would be difficult to explain the exact locations of all the points. Fortunately, you can simply massage deeply between the ribs on your chest and on the inside and outside of your thighs and get most of them. If you are very short on time, it is recommended that you massage at least two points in particular. These are the Large Intestine (along the outside of the thighs) and the Central Meridian (along the junction where your arms meet your chest) Neurolymphatic Points. It is recommended that you massage them both for at least a minute.

The Celtic Weave

The Celtic Weave is both an energy system and an exercise that strengthens that system. For the energy system, it refers to the spiralling, crossing and twisting energies of the body. This energy system is known by different names in different parts of the world. It is represented by two curved lines in the yogic tradition. It's called the Tibetan Energy Rings in the Orient. In the West, it's the intertwined serpents of the caduceus that is found on the staff that is the symbol of the medical profession. In some hospitals in Nepal and Brazil, nurses are expected to regularly perform this exercise on patients. This energetic system connects all of our energy systems together and helps them to work together. Energetic figure eight patterns are an integral part of the Celtic Weave as an energy system and can be found at every level of the body from individual cells to the body as a whole. Strengthening the system can be accomplished by doing figure eights with the hands, arms, legs, hips, eyes and even with the imagination.

When should you do the Celtic Weave?

  • When you feel your energy systems are disconnected.

  • When you are lacking a sense of power.

  • If you have dyslexia or other learning disabilities. If you have immune dysfunction or any illness.

This one may require a little more imagination on your part. If you're worried about not doing it correctly, don't. Whatever you do will be helpful. Stand with your legs about shoulder width apart. Rub your hands together, shake them off and place your palms on your thighs. Wait until you feel you are grounded. Then, while breathing in through your nose, swing your arms out to the sides and bring your hands almost, but not quite together at about chest level. Hold them, palm facing palm, about eight inches apart for a few breaths. Then, again on an in-breath, move them up to each side of your head directly out from your ears. Hold them there, with palms facing the head, about three inches from the ears. When you are ready, leaving your hands in the same position, on an in-breath, bring your elbows together in front of your chest. On the next out-breath, swing your arms down to the front and out to the sides opening your chest. On the next in-breath, again cross your arms in front of your chest and on the out-breath, again swing your arms out to the sides. This time bend over enough that as your arms swing down, your hands will be at the level of your knees. On the next in-breath, again cross your arms in front of your chest and on the out-breath, again swing your arms out to the sides. This time bend over enough that as your arms swing down, your hands will be at the level of your feet. Then, while slowly raising yourself to a standing position, continuously swing your arms in a figure eight motion to the front and sides of your body. When you are upright, continue the figure eight motion up to and over your head. Then drop your hands to each side of your body.

OK, no excuses are allowed. You now know some of the most important energy exercises going. While it's true that doing these exercises alone may not be enough to return you to perfect health, it's also true that most people will feel much better if they do them on a regular basis. If you can strengthen or balance the energies affected by these exercises, you will have built an excellent foundation for the work you may still need to do. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are too weak or for some other reason you cannot do some or even all of the exercises, just do what you can. Modify them to fit your needs. If you can't do any of them, imagine yourself doing them. In some cases, visualizations have been shown to be just as effective as exercising.

You can bet that there will be other exercises showing up on these pages in the future, but for now, why not give these a try. You have an amazing power to heal. Remember that nobody can heal you, but you. This is a great starting point! Good luck!

Berit's Corner

WE DID IT! WE LAUNCHED OUR BLOG!

Now, some of you may wonder, "What on earth has prompted them to do a blog?" Well, there were many reasons and the more Alex and I talked about it, the more excited we became.

To begin with, we want to shift our focus a bit. The private practice is now in its 22nd year and we've been presenting workshops almost as long. There's also our website to maintain and our newsletter that we publish. Sometimes it feels as if we have several full time jobs, and if that isn't enough, we write books and make CDs in our spare time.

We put our thinking caps on and had lots of interesting conversations. After discussing many different options we settled on the idea of a blog. It was something we could do together and we could do it anywhere in the world, should we decide to move again.

Then we had to decide what our blog would be about. That was relatively easy. If you're going to do something, especially if it involves writing about your subject, it should be something you know about and enjoy. OK, so what do we know about - helping people, particularly Alex 'cause he's the therapist. But, at the same time, we did not want to do a self help blog. It's funny how things work out - around that time I happened to read an article about Baby Boomers and a light bulb went off. Alex and I are Boomers! We lived through the 60s loving every minute of it and are thankful for having had the experience.

So, as they say in the marketing world, we now had our target market - Baby Boomers. We both admit that the driving force for us is the fun we can have writing as Boomers, for Boomers. As well, the articles/posts are for anyone else that good information (and a few laughs) may find appealing. Obviously, we will write about being emotionally healthy, but we'll also write about world events, politics, products that interest us, information we have that we think would be helpful to other Boomers and anything else we think is fun and interesting.

To wet your appetite, here's a list of the categories under which you'll find all those interesting posts Alex and I are going to write.

  • Tune-up Kit For Your Mind

  • Alex & Berit on Their Soapbox

  • Challenges Boomers Face

  • What Boomers May Want to Know

  • A potpourri of Tidbits & Amusing Stories

The first thing we need to do now is to write some good stuff and put it on our blog (we've got six posts already up). Then we need to find out how to get our blog noticed, which means more research. Already I have learned one thing, and that is, if one person reads our blog and tells a friend and that friend tells another - we'll be off to the races!

This brings me nicely to the following.

Could you please help us by visiting
our blog and leaving a comment
www.ProudToBeBoomers.com

Anyone that visits our blog in the early stages will realize it's a brand new blog, but if they also see that people have left comments, they may be encouraged to also leave one. And, that is what a blog is all abut. One thing that I've learned about blogs that really stands out for me is the community aspect.

A blog is a place for people, with like minded interests, points of view, or some kind of an affiliation, to share their thoughts and opinions. From my research I've discovered that bloggers make many new friends around the world and some end up meeting each other in person. Now, that appeals to both of us.

Please have a look and tell us what you think of the design, the photos, the survey question, and most importantly, the content.

Important Note:

You don't have to officially be a Boomer
(people born in the years 1946 to 1964)
to check out our blog.
If you're someone born after 1964
you may still enjoy reading our posts because
some information is universal and appeals to all ages.

P.S. To entice you to visit our blog, we've just added four teleclasses to our www.DrAlexLees.com website that you can download and listen to... for F*R*E*E. I realize you can go directly to our website and do that, but we would really appreciate it if you make a stop on our blog first at www.ProudToBeBoomers.com and, leave a comment.

Till next month,
Take care.
