Editor's Note:

In this issue Alex writes about a client session and how he does "voodoo." Dave shares a very personal and touching story about a recent weekend he spent in France commemorating his father-in-law. Rehana provides us with some valuable information on how to clear decades of junk. Tom continues his excellent series on energy medicine exercises - I think he's determined to get us all in tip top shape. There's also an article by Colleen Marwood and how her young daughter used visualisation very creatively. And lastly, I write about the changes in EFT (certification, workshops, etc.) And include an article from EFT Master Lindsay Kenny. We hope you learn something and also enjoy the stories, while you get in shape, especially now that summer is upon us.

"Editing" Unwanted Memories Part 1
by Dr. Alexander R. Lees

"I haven't seen a professional in quite some time," she began, looking about the surroundings nervously. "I think of my childhood as just something that happened, that it's the way it is, and people just have to learn to live with it."

I watched "Lynn" nervously playing with her hair for a second or so, as I needed a moment to figure out the best response.

On the one hand, Lynn seemed to represent a belief that we are "stuck with the memories" as it were, yet she'd made an appointment to see me, and shown up on time. I also sensed she was in a fragile state, and all I had to do was say the wrong thing, and she would shut down again, leave, or both.

"Well, it is true we all have a childhood, and some of it can provide good memories, and some not so good. You're right about the fact we are stuck with it all, but at least we can reduce the emotional impact of the bad stuff," I responded.

Lynn gave me one of those looks females seem to reserve for any male speaking Martian, or at least has proclaimed they can jump tall buildings with a single bound - either way, I needed to find firmer ground, and do so fast.

Since Lynn worked in the world of video and film, I thought an analogy using something familiar would help get the point across. "Think of life as a movie," I began. "Oh, right!" she interjected, "Movies I can edit! I'm talking about reality!"

"Well, when you remember something from your past, and it bothers you in the now, isn't it as if you are seeing it, kind of like a movie, in your mind?" Lynn sat there for a few moments and I once again watched her eyes dart up and to her left as I said, like just then?"

"My girlfriend said you did something like voodoo - how did you know I was recalling something just then?" she asked. "I used to do voodoo," I said, "Now I just read minds," I finished with a silly grin. Before I could explain about eye accessing cues, Lynn suddenly asked, "What were you saying about life and movies?"

"Imagine you are at the studio and you've been given a piece of film, or a video, to edit. You probably want to mark out where the bloopers are, and then once you mark the beginning and the end of the blooper, you can then edit them out, leaving the feel good parts intact."

Due to the changes that Gary Craig has made regarding EFT workshops, we will be making a new schedule once the dust settles and hopefully that will be later this summer.

"If only life were like that," she sighed. "Well, since life is comprised of feel goods, and feel bad memories, and we are, in a sense the sum total of all of those experiences... doesn't it make sense that if we edit or delete the unpleasantness, we'd be a tad more positive, or at least, feel better?" I queried.

"You know, I often wondered why I kept going to counsellors over the years. I always ended up thinking it was just a waste of time; what you just said turned a light bulb on - it's starting to make sense. So you can help me by reducing the way I feel when the flashbacks happen; kind of like I could remember, but the fear and the hurt wouldn't be there?"

This was one of those precarious times in a session where if the counsellor says the right thing, the process can continue to a satisfactory conclusion, and if the wrong response is offered, rapport goes right out the window along with any possibility of further progress.

"Yep, " I offered, adding a smile. "Well, let's give it a shot," she said.

As I began to explain the tapping (EFT) and how it worked , Lynn dropped her eyes down and to her right; as her face began to express discomfort, I stopped the explanation and asked, "Is something amiss?"

"Well, it's bad enough suddenly finding myself in the clutches of a flashback, and living it all over again. I don't think I'm ready to feel any of that on purpose, isn't there another way?"

I could have tapped for "Even though I don't feel like feeling those feelings on purpose..." but decided another tried and true technique might serve better, so I replied, "Okay, since you flashback... to those memories, that is, it's as if you are in fact running a movie... in your head; for now, just notice where the movie starts, and the opening scene, and the last scene, where it ends and as you do so, imagine watching yourself watching the flashback."

"Huh?"

"Sorry," I said. "Imagine someone made a movie, and you are playing a part in that movie. Now imagine you up there on the screen, and she is having a flashback. You are sitting comfortably in a theatre, watching you up on the screen, and that movie you is having a flashback."

After a couple of minutes, Lynn said, "Okay, that's a little easier; now what?"

I then had her modify the movie a bit and we completed the technique. We talked about various things for a while, and then I said, "Lynn, I want you to try and access that particular memory we worked on, and as you do, try and get the feelings back." Lynn went inside, and the confused look on her face told me all I needed to know.

"Well?" I asked.

"Er - I don't know how to say this, " she began, "but the memory... well it just... it isn't the same."

"And the feelings?" I pressed.

"Well, they aren't there. I sort of see what happened, but just vague pieces of it. I don't get any pounding in my chest, or anything else, really. What did you do?"

"Voodoo," I answered.

"Can we do that with the other uglies?" she asked.

"Yep," was my only reply.

"See you next week," Lynn said.

Footnote: As this session was taped, it was easy to transcribe the salient points and hopefully re-enforces the importance of pacing the client as opposed to jumping in too soon and trying to "fix" things before the client is ready. A good session consists of two parts:

  • adequate information gathering, and building rapport, and
  • the introduction and use of a technique the client will accept.

In the next article, you will be introduced to the technique used to "edit" Lynn's unwanted memories.

In Memory of Jack Lloyd Edwards
by David Marshall

On the weekend of 14th/15th June 2008 my wife and I were invited to go to two small villages in the Brittany region of France, near to the town of Vitre. This was to commemorate the death of Jack Lloyd Edwards, the father of my wife, Jacqueline, who was killed during the Second World War when the Stirling bomber, BK646, that he was flying was shot down.

This all came about when our nephew, Jonathan Ives, started researching old aircraft on the Internet. By chance, he came across another enthusiast, Daniel Dahiot, from France, (who just happened to be the President of the Association Bretonne Du Souvenir Aerien 39-45), and was interested in the same thing. They soon discovered that, by coincidence, they had a common interest in one particular event - the crash of the Stirling bomber BK646 over the village of Moulin on the night of 14 & 15 June 1943. So the saga began. There was a long period of research to trace the survivors of the crew and, a few months ago, old war time papers were released by the UK War Office and the documents relating to the ill-fated flight were found.

From all of these sources and the reports of the local villagers, the story of the flight and the fate of the survivors was pieced together and Daniel has written a booklet of the whole story. Daniel also maintains a web site covering this and other events of the period at www.absa39-45.assoc.fr.

Eventually the relatives of the crew were contacted via the Internet. What had happened was that a Stirling bomber, piloted by Jack Lloyd Edwards was on a mission to lay mines in the Gironde estuary near where German U boats were based. On the way they were hit by Flack but managed to carry on until attacked by a German fighter which shot them down. A fire started, the plane was uncontrollable, and the pilot ordered the crew to jump.

The plane was flying over two villages, Bais and Moulins, and Jack stayed with the plane until he could fly it away from the villages. He did not survive the crash. Now that all the information had become available, the two villages had put together a weekend of remembrance for him and his crew. Masterminded by Daniel Dahiot, the villages of Bais and Moulins had done a lot of work to put together a very special occasion.

We were invited to the first village, called Bais, on the Saturday. This was where most of the crew had landed by parachute. Four of the crew had been captured by the Germans and served the rest of the war as prisoners. Two others had managed to escape and were helped by the French patriots who hid them from the Germans. Reports of their escape were found in the war office records, which, until now, had been classed as Top Secret. Individually, they had escaped by making their way to Spain, assisted by the French resistance, who showed them across the border. The bravery of the villagers who sheltered the escaping crew was immense. A Countess and a priest were both killed for helping them escape. One of the crew, having got back home, re-joined the Air Force and was later killed on a training mission.

The effort that the villages had gone to, to show how they felt about these local heroes was quite overwhelming. The village of Bais had commissioned a local artist to make a sketch of the crew and plane. This was unveiled with due ceremony after a welcoming speech by the Mayor and will hang in the museum with other artefacts recovered from the crash site.

On Sunday we went to the other village of Moulins. They had made a special plaque in memory of Jack Lloyd Edwards which they had already mounted on the village war memorial. After a special mass had been said, to a packed church, which dated from the 17th century, there was a procession to the cemetery, led by three old soldiers carrying flags. The Mayor, resplendent in his Tricolour sash, gave a speech, the plaque was unveiled and National anthems and the song of the Resistance were played. We were then invited to join sixty other guests at a special lunch.

I was amazed at how important it was to the villagers that the action of the crew should be commemorated and remembered, and how disastrous they felt that the effects of war are on all sides. They, the villagers of Bais and Moulins, will certainly not let people forget what happened to them and the brave young men who tried to help them. And so our weekend came to an end.

The next day we started the long drive back to Spain which was uneventful (except for really heavy rain, which we don't get much of!)

That really was an unforgettable week end!

Clearing Decades of Junk With Ease
by Rehana Webster

There comes a time in ones life when we can't hold onto 'junk' we have saved for years. If you are like me, I save all my old magazines, papers, articles and books. In pre-computer times that's what I did. There was some satisfaction in knowing that somewhere among the piles of papers, was the one article I was looking for! Of course now I have been filing 'stuff' away on my hard drive and flash drives and other medium for electronic storage and the paper junk is faithfully hoarded.

After having carted my 'junk' from Canada to Australia, to New Zealand, back to Australia and again to New Zealand, I figured that the time has come to clear away the unnecessary, unwanted, irrelevant, out-of-date papers. Especially since I'm planning a move back to Australia and with the high price of shipping these days, I had better do some ruthless sorting and discarding of material.

My first attempt to sort stuff in piles for the dump was a dismal failure. I could not bear to put anything into the 'dump' pile. And if I did, I quickly put it into the 'save' pile. If felt like being disloyal, like getting rid of old and loyal friends. There was a definite feeling of guilt around this exercise! Then I recalled recently reading something about the submodalities of ownership.

A submodality in NLP is a distinction, form, or structure (rather than content) within a sensory representational system. For example, regardless of the content, both external and mental images of any kind will be either colored or monochrome, and stationary or moving. These parameters are submodalities within the visual sense. Similarly, both remembered and actual sounds will be mono or stereo when experienced internally, so mono/stereo is a submodality of sound.

The article mentioned that when we feel attracted to an item, the submodalities are different from when we think or look at an item which we are not attached to. I checked this out and true enough in my mind there was a substantial difference in how the submodalities of the wanted items appeared when compared to the unwanted item.

I decided to try two different strategies with changing the submodalities. One was to move the wanted item to the location (again, in my mind) of the unwanted item and see how that felt. Location was definitely a driver submodality for me. The second was to actually change the submodalities (color, brightness, crispness) of the item/book and match it to the submodalities of the unwanted item. That worked pretty well too. I was able to put several dozen books, wads of paper into the 'dump' pile.

However there was still a substantial pile of 'can't throw out' items. This is where I brought in the EFT tapping. I picked up an item that I knew I should dump, but didn't want to, and while looking at it, I tapped on the EFT points saying out loud, 'really cannot throw away this one'. I noticed that this double whammy strategy really worked for me. The feeling of wanting to hang on to the 'stuff' quickly faded away and I felt fine while moving that item into the 'dump' pile. No feeling of remorse, guilt or ownership remained. I went through the pile of papers fairly quickly and felt this great sense of relief at being able to easily let go of years of paperwork.

The important lesson for me is that I have the tools at my fingertips which I can use every day even on ordinary problems. All I have to do is to use what I know works. Using a combination of NLP techniques and EFT tapping is a great way to smooth the way for resolving our problems.

Energy Exercises for Everyday Living
(Article 2 in the series)

by Tom Dorzab

Here's to your health
Today I'd like to talk about exercises to help:

  • Enhance your immunity.
  • Metabolize everything from food to thoughts.
  • Keep your hormones better balanced.
  • You learn more efficiently.
  • And a great deal more.

Thymus Thump

The thymus gland is an integral part of our immune systems. For a variety of reasons, the majority of us these days have depressed immune systems. By tapping on the area in the center of the chest, as is often done in tai chi classes, the thymus is washed with new energy which stimulates all of our energies, decreasing stress and increasing our vitality and immunity.

When should you thump your thymus?

  • When your energy level feels lower than it should.
  • When you need to improve the function of your immune system.
  • When you are under too much stress.

Spleen Thump

Our Spleen Meridians metabolize everything that we bring in, including food, feelings, chemicals, radiation and many other things. The Spleen Meridian is always involved when a person suffers from a chronic disease. When we go into a state of stress, the Spleen Meridian is the first meridian to lose its energy. Our immune systems are governed by the Triple Warmer and the Spleen Meridians. If the Spleen Meridian stays in a weakened state for a prolonged period of time, metabolic, chemical and hormonal issues are likely to appear also. Needless to say, keeping our Spleen Meridians strong and vibrant is essential to maintainingg a high level of health.

There are points on the body that, when vigorously massaged or tapped, stimulate the lymph system. These same points control the exchange of energy between the meridians and the lymph system. They also help balance their associated meridians. These points are called Neurolymphatic Reflex Points. The Spleen Neurolymphatic Reflex points can be found by beginning just below the breasts, moving slightly to the outside and down one rib. You don't need to spend a lot of time worrying about whether you are in the right place or not. Simply go to the general area, begin tapping and move around slightly until you find a spot that is a little more tender than the surrounding area. It's very likely that you have found the right spots.

When should you tap your Spleen Neurolymphatic Points?

  • When your energy level feels too low.
  • When you suffer from a blood sugar imbalance.
  • When you have an auto-immune disease.
  • When you have a fever.
  • When your body is holding too many toxins.
  • When you are feeling out-of-control.
  • When you feel faint.
  • If you have chronic fatigue syndrome.
  • If you have virtually any illness.

In the last two articles you have learned a few exercises that can be invaluable in helping to keep your energies running smoothly. They don't take much time to do, but they don't do themselves. They need you to complete the loop. Give them a try and see what you think.

In the next 3 articles you will learn the rest of the basic exercises that are a must do for everyone. Stay tuned.

Editor's Note:

Below is an article written by a Mom and how she encouraged her young daughter to try visualization. Turns out the daughter is a very talented visualizer and came up with a very creative visualization to help herself. Many thanks to Colleen (Mom) for sharing her story.

The Perfect Mandible
by Colleen Marwood

Upon visiting the orthodontist with my daughter, who is 12 years old, we found that her jaw (mandible) was very thin in areas and that this jaw may not support further orthodontic treatment. We were then told to seek a specialist's opinion (which means wait a huge amount of time, so that you can save up to pay the specialist big bucks). So, we have time to play, I thought...

I sat down with my daughter and introduced her to a very "perfect mandible" (taken from an anatomy book). She now could envision what her mandible should and could look like. We placed this "perfect mandible" in an imaginary box and placed it in front of her. With her eyes closed I asked her to pretend to remove her own mandible and place it in the "perfect mandible" box. I encouraged her to place it so that it would sink into the "perfect mandible". I told her she could see where she needed to do work and could pick out the areas which were thin and wearing away.

Originally, I had suggested using a fleet of flying hearts loaded with fluid that would be squeezed to fill these areas to begin rebuilding her own mandible. My daughter had her own idea (which was very encouraging to me) with how she should fill in the areas. She had a pretty little bucket and spade that had putty of some sort in it that she would scoop and pat in herself. It was great to see her have fun with this and make it her own.

Once she scooped and patted all the putty in she smoothed it out and announced she was done. I then asked her to remove her own mandible and return it back to her mouth.

She has performed this imaginary rebuilding of her mandible for over two weeks now. I asked her last night how it was going. She said that now she doesn't have to scoop and putty so much but needs to work on smoothing out more. She also has felt that her cheeks are feeling more filled out.

I am excited to see if this has encouraged her body to rebuild in this area. We await her appointment in three more weeks to find out.

Berit's Corner

By now many of you may have read, or heard about, the changes Gary Craig is making to areas of EFT and his website. He has created an "academic" certification program. Also, he will be deleting all workshop listings as of Oct. 1/08. Gary feels strongly that people should learn the "pure" EFT from his DVDs and he's not pleased with some of the feedback he's received over the year regarding some people that have been teaching EFT.

Therefore it will not be quite as easy to find EFT workshops for those people that feel learning EFT in a workshop environment is beneficial and enhances their abilities above and beyond watching DVDs. I was going to write something about the value and advantages of attending a live workshop, when we received a newsletter from a friend of ours. Lindsay Kenny is an EFT Master in the San Francisco/Bay Area, and she has written why she feels attending workshops is essential. I think she said it better than I ever could, and the following is reprinted with Lindsay's permission.

"While new and exciting, Gary's certification does have some limitations if you want to become proficient at EFT or a practitioner of it:

It certifies only that you have watched and understood the videos. That's good, because Gary's videos are great for learning the basics of EFT, especially for yourself or family. However, watching DVDs and passing a test about them (even as thorough and difficult as his may be) does not determine your proficiency with EFT (which is stated on his certificate.)

In my opinion there are three ways to learn EFT:

  • Learn EFT quickly and effectively in experiential EFT workshops (facilitated by a Master or other skilled practitioner) and watch the DVDs.

  • If workshops are not available in your area the next best option is listening to EFT Teleclasses (again, by a Master or other skilled practitioner) and watch the DVDs.

  • Or, only watch the DVDs and spend years and years garnering practice and experience, via trial and error. I did it this way and it was hard and took a long time. And trust me I made a lot of mistakes!

If a person chooses to only learn EFT from the DVDs, it would be like and similar to:

Watching a hundred DVDs on swimming, sit on the beach for weeks, and read every book on oceans, lakes and swimming pools, but until you get into the water and do it yourself you won't know how to swim. Or,

Studying to become a pilot for years, watch 200 planes take off and land, take all the required courses and even pass the written test with flying colors (no pun intended,) but that doesn't make you a pilot! Personally I wouldn't want to be a passenger on a plane with a pilot who has never actually flown an airplane or passed a proficiency test in the air.

EFT is an extraordinary tool that, when used properly, can work magic. Used incorrectly, it can re-traumatize someone or leave the person thinking that EFT doesn't work or, even worse, that it's a scam. You only get one chance to make a first impression.

The reason I offer experiential EFT workshops is to teach people how to actually use EFT; how to understand the complexities, subtleties and promise of EFT and how to become skilled, confident practitioners.

Here are just some of the benefits you get from attending a live workshop:

  • You get to learn from live, experienced practitioners.
  • You can ask questions as they come up for you.
  • You can have your questions answered by someone who uses EFT professionally and knows the answers through experience.
  • You have the ability to safely practice EFT correctly with other students, instead of the public.
  • You have the expertise, guidance and experience of accomplished EFT practitioners right there with you to direct you as you learn. (Imagine taking a ski lesson without an instructor!)
  • You get to learn many new and highly effective EFT techniques, not taught on the DVDs.
  • You learn what to do when the EFT isn't working (and that is a big one!).
  • Learn how to use EFT for complex issues (which most issues are).
  • Experience valuable interaction with fellow students.
  • Learn dozens of ways to make EFT work much quicker and more effectively.
  • Avoid the mistakes and many pitfalls of new practitioners (because you'll be learning from skilled teachers who already know what works and what doesn't).
  • Shorten your learning curve by years.
  • Avoid using the public as guinea pigs while you learn.

Just to be clear, I have said for years that the best way to learn EFT is through a combination of watching Gary's DVDs and experiencing LIVE workshops. I think that's even more important with EFT growing so quickly. The need for competent practitioners will only get greater. Go ahead and watch the DVDs, get the certification if you want to (though it is expensive to take the tests,) but if you plan on using EFT professionally please do yourself and the public a favor by taking live workshops (or teleclasses) from an accomplished EFT facilitator or Master.

To contact Lindsay please visit www.lifecoachingwithlindsay.com

Some of you may be wondering why I've written about any of this and included Lindsay's comments. Also some of you may not be happy with something either one of us wrote. That's OK. I wanted to make everyone aware of the upcoming changes just in case you hadn't heard about them because if you are a practitioner of EFT or a person teaching EFT, you will be affected by these changes.

People teaching workshops will not be limited to the previous "guidelines" of EFT Level 1, 2 & 3 workshops. There will no longer be any Levels 1, 2 & 3 workshops. This frees up people to teach EFT as well as other useful and beneficial techniques such as muscle testing, NLP, behavioural science and a whole host of other techniques that fit and combine so well with EFT.

Life is full of choices and now we will all have even more choices when it comes to choosing how we want to EFT. Learning EFT and other useful "stuff" at live workshop will enhance everyone's capabilities even more.

It's an exciting time in the world of EFT with lots of possibilities. We look forward to the expansion of EFT and the opportunities ahead for all of us.

Till next month,
Take care.
