Your Model of the World
by Dr. Alexander R. Lees

Many people attend workshops seeking information to help themselves, and there is an equal number that also want to help others. There are also numerous tools and techniques you can learn to do so. Some of you are familiar with EFT, NLP, Behavioural Science, etc., etc. But before we jump in to help ourselves and/or others it is useful to consider the following information, especially because all of us have a Model of the World. And, that model affects how we think, feel and act. Understanding what a Model of the World is will help you to help yourself and others more effectively.

There are many ways to explore the marvels of the human brain. One can specialize in neurology, biochemistry, biology and so on. These approaches are referred to as the "hard" sciences, and you can use instruments to take readings, and then record the data as "fact."

There is also the "soft" science approach, which is just as fascinating, and quite complimentary to knowledge of the brain's circuitry used in processing.

To begin with, each of us has a model of the world. Simply put, there is too much data out there for any one brain to assimilate and comprehend. To compensate for this, and to prevent overload, the brain filters out quite a bit of this data, therefore deleting it from conscious awareness.

Once the model (a form of reductionism) is fairly well formed, new data is compared to the model. The new data is said to make sense if it fits with the model, and is said to "not make sense" if it doesn't match with the model.

The HEART of Delivery Adding NLP to EFT
Oct. 6, 7, 8 & 9, 2006

This will be ALL NEW INFORMATION Expand your knowledge of the Art of Delivery with regards to applying EFT.
Flyer with more details coming soon.

Workshop Schedule for the Fall of 2006 will be posted in Reflections in August.

The brain is also self-stimulating and does so by repeating thoughts about the "known" over and over again. The bright people out there tell us the human brain processes some 60,000 thoughts daily. This fact keeps the world somewhat knowable and by extension, somewhat predictable. It is also the way we keep a problem over time.

So, what do we have so far?

The human brain self stimulates, and does so by repeating thoughts daily. If we were to find a way to shut off these thoughts, say for 72 hours or so, then the brain would enter a vegetative state and would not recover. So, we would have to be selective in our approach and only shut down specific thoughts.

How about starting with the thoughts about a problem?

We could change the thoughts, even expand the thoughts, or delete them entirely. Now, this might sound attractive to some who read about it, perhaps somewhat frightening in some way to others, and perhaps "that's impossible" to still others.

Any and all responses to the above concept offer you an insight into YOUR model of the world.

The next article will deal with several tools or techniques to help you begin the journey of enriching your model of the world, and, for a nice teaser, please see Rehana's article in this edition of Reflections.

NLP "Parts" Integration & EFT

The 'Parts Integration' model is a development of an earlier NLP process called Visual Squash. If you have two parts with separate intentions, they're almost guaranteed to conflict and the Parts Model can be very effective in dealing with the presented problem. The result is that this procedure connects the two opposing parts together and achieves resolution of the presented problem.

This model is easily used with EFT as well. Find out what the client feels torn about or the internal conflict they have.

Identify the two conflicting parts. The key is to use the conflict to release the tension between the two parts.

Conflicting parts or Sabotaging beliefs often begin with "I want to..." or " I don't want to…" and are charged with resistance or desire. The client feels like he is being pulled in opposite directions simultaneously.

Focus on both parts; the desire and resistance creating the conflict. The secret is to de-energize the two conflicting sides at the same time. Create strong and precise visual, auditory and kinesthetic anchors for both parts.

For example, if the client has a conflict about 'chocolate,' you may want to consider trying the following:

  • Create the EFT set-up statement and tap on the desire to eat chocolate.
  • Really emphasize the desiring part by describing the look, feel, taste, smell and touch of chocolate.
  • Rate the desire and tap on it till it subsides.
  • Then create the set-up statement for the opposite part not wanting 'chocolate'.
  • Again emphasize this part as much as possible.
  • Tap and rate it.

To complete the process:

  • Use the reminder statement from both the conflicting parts and tap on the EFT points alternating between the two statements. "I love chocolate…" and "I don't want the extra weight …"
  • Collapse both anchors simultaneously.

When successfully applied, the client will let you know that both sides of the conflict feel neutral. In other words, the anchors have collapsed. There is no strong push-pull feeling in either direction. Collapsing the two opposing anchors will bring about new behaviors, as neither of the old behavior is powerful enough to dominate in the person's repertoire of behaviors.

Berit's Corner

It's amazing how things can change so quickly! I just read my last column (June edition of Reflections) and thought, "Poor Alex and Berit, having such a hard time with the move and the renos." Five weeks have gone by since I wrote that and things have improved dramatically. My kitchen looks great (we knocked out two walls facing the living and dining rooms), most of the painting and "stuff" is done in our offices (but I still have nine doors to paint!) And my garden is starting to take shape. The front yard is looking good and the flowers are blooming. It's a nice house and it's starting to feel like "home." I still haven't unpacked and have decided to wait for some rainy days to do that. I don't want to be inside now that summer has finally arrived.

The other cool thing is Alex's shed/workshop is taking shape. It's even got a window so I can call Alex from our kitchen window and he should hear me. Or, maybe we'll get an intercom, then he won't be able to ignore me :-)

Three weeks after our move we had our first EFT Level 3 workshop, and I can say without a doubt, it's one of the best workshops we've ever done! Alex was in fine form and the participants were great. That extra "something" that makes a great workshop is the people attending, and the people at this workshop were fantastic. It was an honour and a pleasure to spend 2 ˝ days with this group. I wish we could figure out a way to have these people attend all our workshops... we'd be guaranteed a great time, each tine!

Some Exciting News

We've had many requests from people to learn NLP and after our Level 3 workshop, we said, "Let's do it!" And, let's do it right. Which means more than one trainer and make the workshop four days so people can have as much info as we can put into a workshop without exhausting everyone :-)

But, I need to digress for a bit first. Alex is going to be a speaker (he will be talking about EFT) at the World NLP Health Conference in San Francisco at the end of September (see notice about conference earlier in this newsletter). I mentioned that Alex was going to be a speaker to Rehana (our friend and colleague in new Zealand) and she decided to attend the conference.

Now... back to our NLP workshop... When Rehana told me she was going to go to San Francisco I casually asked her if she would like to come up to Vancouver and both she and Alex could do a workshop together. Rehana thought it was a great idea and so Rehana and Alex will co-teach:

The Heart of Delivery
Adding NLP to EFT

October 6, 7, 8 & 9, 2006
Richmond, BC
This will be ALL NEW INFORMATION
and help to expand your knowledge
of the Art of Delivery with regards to applying EFT.

We are really excited about doing this workshop and can't wait for October! Rehana is an EFT Master and an NLP Master Practitioner, with 15 years corporate training experience. Alex is an EFT Expert, Certified International Trainer of NLP and 16 years experience presenting seminars and workshops. The combination of these two will be a lot of fun, not only will everyone learn a great deal, but there will be lots of laughter as both Rehana and Alex have a somewhat warped sense of humour :-)

I'm going to prepare a flyer with all the details as soon as I get this newsletter done, and we will also have a new web page with even more details. For now, you know the dates and the location, so please mark it on your calendars.

This is the first time this information will be taught to anyone in the EFT community, so you don't want to miss this opportunity!

Meanwhile, there are a number of people scheduled to take their EFT Certified Practitioner Practical exam with Alex during the summer. We will announce the names of the Certified Practitioners in our newsletter and also list them on our new website.

We started the new website just before our move and then had to put it on hold because of the move. But, completing it is one of our goals over the summer. This website will have a new look and feel, much more 21st century, so please stay tuned for the launch announcement.

So, we have an action packed summer planned... work on our house, create a new workshop and website... and relax and enjoy the sunshine. Speaking of sunshine, it's a beautiful day today so I'm going to go out and play in my garden! I hope you have a great summer and all your flowers bloom!

Take care,
Till next month...

Happy Birthday...

Canada on July 1st
and
America on July 4th

We hope you all enjoy your celebrations!

Generally, I hate the warnings that get sent around, but I have to admit that this one is important. Please protect everyone you know by sending this to your entire email list. If a man comes to your front door and says he is conducting a survey and asks you to show him your bare behind, do NOT show him your bare behind. This is a scam - he only wants to see your bare behind.

I wish I had seen this yesterday. I feel so stupid!
