EFT
and the Master's Designation Although EFT is still listed as 'experimental,' the time honoured 'word of mouth' network has placed it firmly in the lead position of self-help modalities. One only has to do a Google search to find practitioners listed in many, many countries, and the numbers are growing daily. Which brings me to the essence of this article. As this important work continues to expand, it will, like its predecessors, attract more and more 'practitioners,' those that wish to use it solely for their own relief, and those that will seek to aid others. It is within this second group, historically, where certain issues will arise. To begin with, most people are pretty decent, in my experience, and once introduced to the simplicity and gentleness of EFT, will embrace it wholeheartedly, and hopefully pass it on in kind. At the same time, there are minimal checks and balances built in. To do so requires an exponential increase in administration (staffing, etc.) and like everything else that seems good for humanity, once a great idea pops up from below the radar, the public understandably demands quality controls be set in place to protect them. Granted, the feedback
regarding the results of experiencing an EFT session with another party
has been gratifying to read or otherwise hear about, and represents
the majority of cases. At the same time, the news does trickle in that
sometimes, the session was, less than optimal. |

Berit and I can be considered a Mom and Pop organization, and therefore, lack the staff and resources necessary to follow-up on every concern. Having said that, both of us have taken the time to address as many 'queries' as possible, and, with great delight, can report that from our survey, more exposure to the art of an EFT session would do wonders to reduce disappointments, and further enhance the practitioner's reputation for quality work.
As many of you are no doubt aware, Gary Craig has created an EFT Master's designation. This will be an invitation only program, and if invited, will require the individual to demonstrate a level of competency designating the person as a professional. From this group, Trainers will be selected, and after further input and instruction, will be allowed to add the appropriate designation after their names. Application of EFT in its simplest form, that is learning the points to tap, and adding a phrase or two, will suffice for many. Only the market can decide the validity through their experience. For those more dedicated, those with vision, a different paradigm applies and this point brings us back to the Art of EFT. Many have written to inquire about training in regards to comfortably setting up an EFT session. Those questions are from people that obviously enjoy helping themselves and others to grow and change in positive and resourceful ways. For those dedicated ones, I would like to offer the following concept. I have been teaching two distinctive disciplines for some time: NLP and EFT. This is because some time ago, I realized NLP provided a concept, a way of thinking about the mind, that allowed for change-work in much faster ways than those provided by several years in standard, accepted university training. Not to knock a university education, and the status that it offers, but if you genuinely want to grow, and help others to do so as well, then learning about NLP is a great time saver. Some time after NLP began to really take hold (in the middle 1980s) EFT came along in the middle 90s. The beauty of this is one does not compete with the other. It isn't a question of which is better. As a matter of fact, the idea of combining them creates a synergy, a concept whereby the end result is greater than the sum of its parts. After much thought triggered by interest from some of you, a few months ago I created the first in a series of workshops that combines these two powerful bodies of information - NLP and EFT. In my experience, this combination provides an individual with a stand-alone technique. The result of this blend of disciplines is synergistic, and rivals the best of university trained students easily. So for the special few that would like to experience and benefit from this unique training, please contact us to let us know your interest. And, just to let you know, we will actually be solving issues presented during the training. In other words, the format of this training will not be limited to learning only, and then going home to find someone to practise on. This will be a "Let's fix it now!" approach, and will definitely serve you well, especially if at some time you decide to consider applying to become an EFT Master. Note: There is a one day NLP/EFT Workshop scheduled for Oct. 15, 2005. The next workshop will be a Special NLP/EFT 2½ day workshop at the end of January 2006. We will be posting a flyer with the details on our website shortly, so everyone living outside the greater Vancouver area can make their travel plans.
Information
Gathering & EFT In our zest to apply EFT efficiently, we sometimes phrase this desire in our mind as: "The more tapping, the better." This can be quite a valid assumption, to a point! While teaching EFT, I have observed some EFT practitioners begin tapping the 'client' within a few seconds of sitting down, and continuously doing so throughout the session. Others do not. The question I am asked by students is essentially the following, "Which is the right way?" By way of helping them to understand this issue more fully, I usually suggest they ask: "What is the difference that makes the difference?" The answer to that question is essentially one of information gathering. The information gathering portion of any intervention can be just as important as applying a technique, in this case EFT, to 'fix' things. Part of the time devoted to proper information gathering rests with the client. It is well known we all speak about things both globally and specifically. "I hurt," is a global statement. Answering the questions, "How are you hurt? Who hurt you? You hurt because of?" leads to specifics. As a general rule, the more specific and succinct a person is in describing a problem, the more time can be devoted to doing something about the presented issue. Most of you are now familiar with generalizations vs specifics. A generalization is a form of global communication, that is, an individual is sharing a rule that is used to classify experience(s). Tapping on the presented generalization can make some headway; the client (who can also be oneself) feels better. However, much more can be accomplished by assisting the client to become more specific, which is just one reason for the information gathering. There are perhaps as many ways to assist a person in recalling specifics as there are imaginative and versatile people. However, if you would like a tried and true map to guide you to greater skills, I suggest learning NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming). One specific segment of that training is referred to as The Meta Model. The Meta Model is simply a description for the process of learning how to ask questions for information gathering purposes, for gaining a more complete understanding of the problem presented. Once this phase is satisfied, EFT can be applied with even more enriching and empowering results. By way of comparison, we'll now look at a possible excerpt from an exchange between a practitioner and client, without this extra training, and with this extra training. Without extra training: Client: "My mother didn't love me." The practitioner introduces EFT, and after a round, asks the client for feedback. Client: "Much better. I feel relaxed." With extra training: Client:
"My mother didn't love me." Applying EFT to this uncovered information will certainly serve the client more usefully than simply tapping on: "My mother didn't love me." Both will work; however, the second example would be even more empowering. Please remember, you are engaged in helping, be it yourself or someone else. "Being understood," means you have supplied, or are about to supply, a solution. It also implies the client is ready for it. Information gathering is an important part of this process, and developing your skills to do so enriches the experience tremendously. It will also add a better insight into a statement made by Stephen Covey, in his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People - "Seek first to understand, before being understood." So please understand that sometimes hopping right to it and tapping away turns out to be the best thing you could have done. At other times, taking the time to gather the necessary information will be more important. By knowing about both approaches you increase your chances of success through versatility, and that's what you, and/or your client want, is it not?

It's almost the end of August and the weather is still fabulous. As I wrote at the end of July, I was looking forward to my mini-holiday while Alex was in San Francisco at the EFT Master's Workshop. I'm happy to report that I had a great time! My visit with Tamara was a delight... we talked and talked, and then talked some more. Then we took a break from talking and went to a great new casino... Tamara and I both enjoy gambling once in a while. It's really a cheap form of entertainment... I set a limit at the beginning... this time it was $40.00 and had a ball playing poker for five hours! Unfortunately neither of us won any money to take home, but as Tamara said, "She was happy to help the Canadian economy by leaving her money behind in Canada." Some of you may
be wondering if Alex now has the designation of EFT Master... the announcement
of the names will be made by Gary Craig and there will be a new page
on his website where he will list the EFT Masters. This probably won't
happen until sometime in the Fall, so we will all wait to hear until
then. Meanwhile, Alex says I can call him "Master Alex" any time I want,
as it's an improvement over "What's His Name." One of the benefits of Alex being at the EFT Master's workshop was all the people he met. He renewed previous friendships and made new ones. I also had the pleasure of "meeting" some of these people via phone calls and emails. It's always a great pleasure for me to hear how much people respect and admire my husband! Judging from the feedback Alex did well and was able to help the person he worked with in one of the practitioner/client sessions that was part of the "testing" of the candidates for EFT Master. Alex was also able to survive quite nicely without me... he flew to San Francisco, picked up the rental car, found the hotel and showed up the first morning of the workshop. Then he proceeded to manage fine, all by himself, for the next five days. He even saw a client of ours who lives in California. She drove up to San Francisco to have a session with Alex after the workshop was finished. But before long...
Alex, being somewhat a typical male, reverted back to, "Have you seen
my glasses? Do you know where my car keys are? What's for dinner?" All
of which proved that although he managed fine without me for a few days,
he does need me... and it also allowed me to stop calling him "Master
Alex" rather quickly. Alex may be an EFT Master (whether he passed or
not) but he can't find his glasses, even when they're sitting on top
of his head. "Master" indeed! Hope you're relaxing too! Till next month, take care.
