"Glitches" in Our Programming
by Dr. Alexander R. Lees

In previous articles (archived on our website www.DrAlexLees.com) we began by exploring a little bit of the science behind the scenes. We learned that emotions are represented in the body as neuropeptides. This is one of the ways the mind "talks" to the body, by converting thought/emotion into a language the body can understand - chemistry.

As ongoing and fascinating research has discovered, the receptor sites for the neuropeptides exist throughout the body, including the brain, the immune system, the gastro intestinal, etc. An emotional reaction thus produces a message that the body will respond to, so we can begin to think of the thought/emotion as programming. A negative thought/emotion can therefore be thought of as a "glitch" in the programming, a disruption within the system.

It is useful to take a moment and realize how, exactly, the "glitch" manifests. Happiness, joy, contentment, optimism, hope, enthusiasm, confidence. These are words describing the natural, or normal state for a human being, and are the prerequisite tools for being able to look back one day and declare, "Now that was one heck of a ride!"

Negative thoughts/emotions are therefore a disruption of this natural state.

Given enough of them, and the system will become biased (programmed) towards the negative.

This moving away from the "natural" state has many labels, depending on form: depressed, anti-social, tension headaches, lack of confidence, self esteem or worth - are but a few of the labels we use to describe the result.

But, wait a minute. If an unwanted program is running, then who is the programmer, who is the thinker... of these thoughts? It is This Person that EFT will appeal to. It is this person that will want to learn EFT and apply it. It is, this person that will decide to begin to remove the glitches in order to live a much more fulfilling life.

Gary Craig, the founder of EFT, produces an excellent set of videos, VCDs and DVDs on the application of EFT and the serious student will do well to acquire this inexpensive training. The sets are available on his website (www.emofree.com) or can be ordered from our office, whichever is most convenient.

I also present seminars on the subject for those that wish further assistance in improving their abilities even more. In the forthcoming articles in this series we will begin to explore the practical; we will begin to apply EFT, using the "short cut" method on various issues, in a step by step format. The first subject that we will apply EFT to is headaches. Stay tuned.

Oh, one last thing... please read "Berit's Corner" at the end of the newsletter.

McMaster University researchers have proven men can't think straight after just looking at pictures of attractive women. Male students were shown pictures of either attractive or non-attractive women, then asked to roll some dice. When they threw doubles, the men would get a choice of taking $15 then and $35 the next day, or $50 then and $75 in from one week to eight months. The men who had just viewed the pictures of attractive women were far more likely to take the lesser sum right away.

The same test was done with female students who showed no difference in their response between the group viewing the attractive men to those viewing the non-attractive men.

The researchers found that viewing the pictures of attractive women sub-consciously fired courtship and mating responses in the brain. This became associated with an immediate need for money, still important in our culture as part of the courtship ritual.

QUESTION:
What is the difference between a generalization and a specific? What do the terms mean, and do you treat them differently?

ANSWER:
This question, in various forms, is often asked. The serious student of EFT will do well to make the distinction. Doing so will speed progress measurably. Behavioural Science defines a generalization as the response to an event that becomes a "rule" for responding to future "similar" events. So, in this sense, a generalization is now a category, a way of defining or classifying certain future events.

For our purposes, we can define a generalization as the end result of an event, or series of events. For example:

Generalization: Low self esteem.

Definition: Negative talk about self, to self, over time.

Specifics: Those experiences that generated a negative emotional reaction. That N.E.R. (Negative emotional response) expressed itself in negative self talk.

Synopsis: One can tap on the generalization (in this case, low self esteem) and indeed, with persistence over time, make headway.

By recalling the specific experience, and releasing the emotion actually experienced at the time, and then the next one, and so on, at some point, the change will "generalize" through the system. In other words, the self esteem will return to normal.

If you have a question about the application of EFT and would like to have it answered in Reflections, send us an email at lees@dralexlees.com and put “EFT Q & A” in the Subject Heading. We will answer questions that are of interest, and helpful to the majority of EFT users. For those that need immediate assistance you may want to consider a phone session, see House Calls By Phone.

U.S. Study Links Worrying to Alzheimer's

According to researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, those who often experience negative emotions such as depression and anxiety are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's than those less prone to such emotions.

The study focused on 797 people, with an average age of 75, who were evaluated both for psychological distress and mental decline when they started the study and then yearly. During an average of 4.9 years of follow-up, 140 people in the study developed Alzheimer's. Those scoring in the top 10 per cent of the distress scale were twice as likely to develop the brain disease than those who scored in the lowest 10 per cent.

"People differ in their tendency to experience psychological distress and this is a stable personality trait throughout adulthood," said Robert Wilson, lead author of the study that appears in the journal Neurology. (http://www.neurology.org)

Berit's Corner

A dear friend of mine the other day said, "I love Spring! Seeing as how Spring is not my favourite season, I love the Fall, I asked her, "Why?" She replied, "Everything smells so fresh and new. All the flowers are starting to bloom, it's that time of year where I want to start doing something, anything, new." We happened to be standing near a tree in full bloom, full of cherry blossoms. What a gorgeous sight! I started to think, "Yes, this is pretty amazing. There's something to this feeling of new. I like doing new things. So, in the spirit of Spring and doing something new we have a new project.

There are many, many books, tapes, CDs and videos available that help a woman deal with the "physical" aspects of life. We want to do something to help women with the "emotional" aspects of life. We especially want to help women over the age of 45. And, we need your help.

In the next few editions of our newsletter we are going to ask questions. The questions are about your life as a woman over the age of 45...

  • What are you thinking about?
  • What are you feeling?
  • Are you happy?
  • Are you unhappy?
  • Are you content?
  • What are the areas of concern in your life?
  • Is there anything you would like to change?
  • What kind of information would be helpful for you to make changes?

By answering these questions you will help us to design a program, to help you.

II’m one of the women over 45, as a matter of fact, I will be 57 this June. I know what some of you women out there are going through. Sometimes life is difficult and complicated. We are different now than when we were in our 20's, 30's and early 40's, and for some in this age category, it’s not much fun.

We want to help. We want to make a difference in your lives. We want you to really enjoy the rest of your life. For most of us that means another 30 or 40 years on this planet, and I for one, want to have the best life possible. I want to say, “Wow! What a ride!”

All we’re asking you to do is to take a few minutes and answer a question, or two. We’ll do the rest. Once the questions have been asked and answered, we’ll advise you of what and how, we’re going to do to help. The end result may be a book, a CD, a video, or all of them. This is a new project for us, and it will evolve as we go along. Come to think of it, that’s just what we women do... we evolve... and, for those of us over the age of 45, we are evolving into dynamite women! So, here’s the first question:

So, here's the first question:

If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be?

Please send your answer to: Berit@dralexlees.com

All replies will be kept confidential. If you have a friend that would also like to help, please forward the newsletter to her. The more responses we receive, the better.

I am really looking forward to hearing from you ladies... I know that when I read your replies, I'll probably cry, laugh, and learn something from each and everyone of you. And, I may do all of those things from one single letter. Hopefully, we will have some fun with this.

Till next month, take care.

Theory of Life

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but
rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally
worn out, smiling broadly, and proclaiming...

"Wow! What a ride!"
