About Us

A Message from Dr. Lees

You have the power within you to make positive, lasting changes, if you so desire.  I would like to invite you on a journey, through the pathways of our web site, by beginning with a story...

In my early 20s I was driving my beloved Austin Healy from Ontario to Alberta, where I was to be stationed with the Canadian Air Force. Unbeknownst to me, the exhaust was leaking and I passed out from the fumes, causing the car to accelerate. One minute I was driving my car, the next moment I woke up in a hospital bed, and three days had passed by. The diagnosis was "serious neurological damage, and the prognosis is very poor."

At that time of my life, I didn’t even know what a "prognosis" was, but it did sound like a virus or something, and I remember wondering if they had a pill for it. The Air Force took good care of its personnel and I met with many doctors and specialists. Most suggested that I accept a medical release from the Air Force. I still recall part of a conversation with a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic – "If I accept the medical pension, I accept the diagnosis. No!"

Seems to me he admired my spirit, but felt I wasn’t really in touch with reality, and that denial wasn’t going to accomplish a thing. He said, "Your identity, who you think you are, is that of a gymnast and racing car driver. Neither of those are an option any longer. Letting go of that will help you to adjust to the limitations you face."

Well, he was right, in a way. It was very difficult to let that identity go. It took a bit of time. But, to accept "not walking," well that wasn’t an option, not once. Thus began my research into what I could do to help myself, and a long journey it became indeed. Along with visits to medical professionals, I also tried chiropractic, massage, physiotherapy, rolfing, the martial arts, nutritional supplements and "mind stuff." To this day I still believe no one discipline can be congruently determined to be "the One." Seems to me it was the combination, blended nicely with stubborn determination, desire and belief, that provided me the outcome I so desperately wanted.

We are called "stubborn" when what we pursue is detrimental to self or others. We are called "focused and determined" when we succeed. We are "obsessive compulsive" when there seems to be no value to the ritual we repeat, and "motivated" when we use it to learn or do something useful. By learning how it all works, and how to change our interpretation, attitudes and beliefs in a more beneficial way, the very life we live becomes more pleasant and rewarding.

Many of the forward thinkers of today are embracing the simpler, more efficient methods becoming available to help those that want to clear the mental "junk" and begin to enjoy life more. It’s nice to see the numbers growing and the information more easily available to those that want it. Even the public’s concept of psychotherapists is changing. Now we are known as coaches, sources of information, people helpers, or simply, the hired help. Time to say goodbye to the priesthood idea, and meet the real guru – Yourself!

My story had a happy ending and I did not spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair. I do believe very strongly that my attitude and beliefs were the difference, that made the difference. Long before I took my training and education I knew, and believed, that the mind was a very powerful tool. One just had to harness the energy and use its power to achieve a goal. My goal was to walk and I did. There are many people on this planet that have overcome disasters, accidents, misfortune and untold misery, to lead happy and healthy lives. I ended up in the helping profession, as a counsellor and therapist, so that I could help people to realize that they have the power within themselves to overcome adversity.

Allow me the pleasure of helping you find and nourish your inner power.

Berit Lees

There's an old adage - behind every successful man, stands a woman...who is: patient, kind, understanding, loving, has a sense of humour, a head for business, is organized, fun to be with, and...is the BOSS! That's my wife Berit.

She's the "glue" that holds it all together. When Berit joined me in my private practice (18 years ago) we were both wise enough to establish and create our own areas of responsibility, based on our expertise. I help clients with their issues and problems, present seminars and workshops; Berit does everything else that has to do with the successful operation of a business. It's teamwork at its best!

Together, we are Dr. Alexander R. Lees & Associates Inc. and our mutual goal is to help people lead a healthier, happier life.
